Healthy “Vices”

–While Sally is on vacation (think “Relaxation”!), we’re bringing back some of our earlier blogs that are definitely worth a re-read!

If you haven’t done so already, take the time to read through the Akea Healthy Living tips, which we call the BluePrint for Life. Unfortunately, some people think “healthy living” means “boredom,” “drudgery,” and “hard work,” too. It’s just not so. Many of the choices that are best for our health and longevity are also quite fun and pleasurable, even sensuous.

Take relaxation—who doesn’t enjoy kicking back and finding pleasure in the moment? Or spending time with friends and family (connection)? How about eating colorful, delicious meals that satisfy not just hunger, but all of your senses? Now a Health Magazine article points out that many of life’s so-called vices are actually great for you. .

  • Take sleep—getting plenty of sleep can help prevent blood sugar problems, weight gain, and memory loss, this article notes.
  • Dark chocolate provides antioxidants called flavonoids, which can be powerful nutritional health enhancers.
  • Time with friends and family is restorative to our health and happiness.
  • And getting enough healthy fats in our diet can help prevent heart disease and stroke, as well as ensure circulation and assimilation of hormones and nutrients.

While this is great information to bring to readers, it is not news. These are all things the Hot Spot residents have known intrinsically for centuries. At Akea, we are pleased to help bring this knowledge to Western audiences—and to see good health practices discussed in the mainstream media.
